12 The circumstances of Masséna’s violation of Almeida’s surrender terms were in a letter from Governor Cox to Marshal Beresford dated at Aldea de Obispo on 30 August 1810. Beresford sent it on to Wellington when he recieved it on 4 September. As it turned out the pioneer corps does not appear to have been formed as the militiamen seemingly absconded in large numbers as well. Cox, and Maj Hewitt and Capt Tolly of the 24th Portuguese were sent to England for exchange. See Boletim do Arquivo Historico Militar, III (1933) and Wellington’s Dispatches, VI, pp. 464-465.
